Server deployment and client-side virtualization
How servers are deployed, and the difference between server and client-side virtualization.
How servers are deployed
- Physical deployment — install an OS directly on dedicated hardware.
- Virtualized deployment — run several VMs on one physical host.
- Cloud deployment — rent virtual servers from a provider and scale on demand.
Server vs client-side virtualization
| Aspect | Server virtualization | Client-side virtualization |
|---|---|---|
| Host | Data-centre hardware | Desktop or laptop |
| Goal | Consolidate workloads | Run another OS or test software |
| Scale | Many VMs per host | Usually one or a few |
| Example | Hyper-V, ESXi | VirtualBox, Windows Sandbox |
